Downhill in Guatemala

The Zoo
De clarinero is een veelzijdige fluiter. Hij is zwart, met een lange staart, en komt veel voor in Mexico. Dit is een boom in Gogorrón (18 juni 2003) met een stuk of honderd clarinero's.

De tzenzontle is een geel vogeltje met zwarte vleugels. Nogal schuw van aard. Zelf heb ik hem de smaal gedoopt. De smaal is in staat een heel scala aan denigrerende klanken te produceren. Als ze met meer zijn lijkt er soms een strijd uit te barsten om wie er het smaalst kan fluiten. (Tangolunda, 21 augustus 2003)

De Sima de las Cotorras is een bijzonder fenomeen. Een vrijwel rond gat van 150 meter breed en 150 meter diep in de rotsbodem van Chiapas. In het gat wonen honderden cotorras, groene papegaaitjes. Elke ochtend vliegen ze uit. En elke avond verzamelen ze zich weer aan de rand van het gat, om vervolgens in grote groepen al luid kwetterend omlaag te cirkelen, op zoek naar een plekje in de rotswand om te slapen. Verder heb je hier ook nog vogels die klinken alsof je een glazen fles vol laat lopen met water, vogels die klinken alsof je piepend een ballon laat leeglopen, en (heel verwarrend) vogels die klinken alsof iemand je aandacht wil trekken.
Leaf cutter ants (called wee wees in Belize) can be found all over Central America. Wee wees are fungus farmers. They cut leaves from trees and shrubs into pieces and bring them to their underground nest. In there in several processing stages the leaves are fed to the fungus. In return the fungus makes food for the ants. Fungus happy, ants happy, just the poor tree is a bit unlucky.
The ants nest and their "meadow" can be several hundred meters apart. In between is a "wee wee highway".

Hermits are lobsters pretending to be snails. They curl themselves up in an abandoned shell. At night they eat whatever they can find on the ground. Any food you leave on Glover's island will be gone the next day.

Pelicans catch fish by divebombing into the sea with their beak wide open. One mouthfull may contain up to twelve liters of water, usually including a fish. They let the water flow out of their beak and swallow the fish. This all is not as easy as it sounds.

And did you know that pelicans can surf? Flying over the sea they follow the breaking waves, using the wind generated by the waves.

At hotel Georgina, high in the mountains of Costa Rica, bottles with sugar water attracted a lot of hummingbirds. The bottles were right behind the restaurant window.

In the jungle the sound of the crickets can be maddening. And then suddenly you hear a howler monkey.

Onderweg in Panama kwam ik honderden zwarte gieren tegen, die dankbaar gebruik maakten van de thermiek om hoogte te winnen. Het leek net of ze met z'n allen een tornado nadeden.
